Assets School

Transforming Lives Center

SUMMARY

Assets School has created the first private school-based full resource center on Oahu providing assessments of students struggling a traditional school setting or because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Early intervention is critical for a student with learning differences to succeed in school and life. Data shows that a child who does not receive the intervention needed has a significant probability of dropping out of school, teenage pregnancy, drug abuse and more.

Our assessments provide a family and the student's teachers a learning profile and recommendations for a successful outcome. Due to COVID, it is widely known that students suffered a learning gap. The assessment will provide a blueprint for success!

We are honored highly credentialed Dr. Elsa Lee is our Clinical Director. Furthermore, we are grateful to Governor David Ige, First Lady Dawn Amano-Ige, and the GEER Committee for supporting this important life-changing center.

OUTCOME :

Our Transforming Lives Center opened June 24, 2022 and we have more than 80 families wanting an assessment for their child. Assessments are underway and we are receiving positive feedback. Assessments are available to the entire community — public, private, and charter school students. We are measuring our success by how many families have inquired for an assessment as well as the post success of the student. We intend that the Transforming Lives Center will be a continuous resource for the family.

Please view our Transforming Lives Center video. You will see a quick highlight video of the grand opening with congratulatory remarks by First Lady Dawn Amano-Ige. UHA Health Insurance was our first corporate donor with a $25,000 donation during our opening. We are hopeful this will have a ripple effect with support.

LESSONS LEARNED :

Overall, we, like many in our beloved state, appreciate how innovation during the COVID-19 pandemic has allowed us to make the best attempt possible to educate our students. The new Transforming Lives Center is equipped to provide distant assessments if it is necessary. The Governor's focus on innovation and our own lessons learned during COVID-19, factored in to our decision to ensure that we could go virtual with assessments if necessary. Assets has always offered a free community outreach mission by providing free reading screenings for students K-3 for nearly two decades. The Transforming Lives Center allows us to expand on our mission to educate the community about learning differences and to assist our community.
