Camp Mokule'ia

Mixed Plate Program

SUMMARY

Camp Mokule'ia brought together a "hui" of teachers, farmers, and chefs to inspire and teach Hawai‘i how to grow and cook local ingredients so that they won’t have to worry about where their next meal is coming from. It’s a fresh and new approach highlighting innovative techniques to prepare nutritious produce with community partnerships.

OUTCOME :

We had 55 participating community members, including teachers, farmers, and chefs come together at 3 workshops at Camp Mokule'ia. We featured chefs from the Chef Hui, Fete, and the Ulu Coop. Teachers had the opportunity to network, craft lesson plans, and engage with our staff at the camp. One participant commented, "Mixed Plate created an inspired experience to see how community organizations can come together to change the world... one seed, one plant, one meal at a time."

LESSONS LEARNED :

Implementing Innovation has been an amazing opportunity for growth for us as an organization as well as individuals. There were many "pivots" among the details in the implementation process and having the Community of Practice to support us along the journey was crucial. We lived the saying that "many hands make light work."
